MOA Galleria - Shopping Center

Passages, Shopping Center (1981)
Screenprint painting by Richard Estes

Above is a moody print by American photorealism painter, Richard Estes. The shopping center scene captured here is a part of his Urban Landscapes III series.

When I first saw this I thought it was a real photograph! And the original is even more impresssive than this small, highly compressed jpeg file which doesn't really do it proper justice. I really love this piece.

This is actually Lakewood Center, in Lakewood California, cira 1970's, before the mall was turned into an indoor shopping center. I used to hang out here before hanging out was popular. Estes is my favorite photorealist along with Close and Bell. All inspirations for my work.

Recently, I was lucky enough to see some of his works at the Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, Spain. If you think his paintings look good online, wait until you see them in person.

In the late 70's Estes had a great exhibit at the Smithsonian- "The Urban Landscape" There is a companion book of the paintings in the exhibit- great work! It's really exciting to see the Estes treatment to a place very familiar to me!
