Altamonte Mall
Altamonte Springs, Florida - circa 1970s
Another decidedly spaceship-like interior! This time, it's two-level Altamonte Mall, in Altamonte Springs, Florida. This photo probably dates to around the time the mall first opened in 1974, I'm guessing--somewhere around there anyway.
The quality isn't the best in this image, I know, but still... There's so much groovy stuff to dig in this shot (can you see the "Dandelion" fountain over there in the lush garden court?), I think I'll just get out of the way and let the digging commence! ;)

thanks for the memories, I went here as a kid and it always felt like tbe biggest place on earth, endless shopping. Is this a Taubman mall?
Wow. I hope we see a color versian of this mall soon because it looks fantastic!
I agree with didi, this mall looks cool!
This is awesome. I love these Seventies malls with some architectural design and interest!

Another winner, Keith. FYI, I've re-sent a small part of the first of those old e-mails you didn't get. They're of Jefferson Mall. As soon as I get confirmation that they reached you, I'll proceed with the rest. Thanks.
I vividly remember visiting that mall in the 1980s on Disney vacations as a child. The center court was filled with fountains (one more is to the left and there was another fountain underneath the stairs just off center court)...the large fountain to the right, along with the other foutnains, were lit with multi-colored lights and there were plenty of seating areas around the fountains. At that time, it seemed like the only 2 level mall in the Orlando area. Today, this mall is quite sterile the center court area is totally different.
Yeah this mall definitely lost its cool factor after a major renovation but as kid any big mall seems amazing, I guess its a proportion thing.
This is my favorite mall of all time. I used to ride my bike with my friends to it in the 1970's summers. The orange and brown color scheme sadly gave way to a miami vice deco style in the late 80's. Many great memories here playing video games, shopping for records in Camelot Music, etc. Thanks for the memories, I hope someone can find more pics.
There is a color version of this shot on reddit now: https://images.app.goo.gl/AWKcJUmLcoeNydF66
