Bergen Mall

Paramus, New Jersey - circa '60s or '70s

Aerial image of Bergen Mall. If anyone can help me more definitively date this shot, I'd appreciate it, because I'm just not sure. Really like the view, though.

If you'd like to know more about the history of this mall, just hit the resource links below, and if you haven't seen it yet, be sure and check out the Bergen Mall video I posted here a while back.

Because the Korvettes hasn't been built yet across Route 4, that picture has got to be prior to 1960. It's probably from the opening of the mall in 1957. You'll also see there is no Orbach's yet (which was built around 1969 or so). (CF from Paramus)

It's not a mall... it's a "town center" now (whatever!) :)
No anchor store here; it's empty. What was it before?
Does anyone know what the mega mall just to the left in the aerial is?

Century 21 opened in August, the mall is being redeveloped and torn down in stages. There is going to be a Target and Whole Foods added and some more stores.

WOW! Is that an auxiliary parking lot accross the highway from the mall? It even has overflow cars parking there!
The whole think looks amazing!

I grew up 2 blocks from the Bergen Mall. I remember when they had the kiddie rides in the center of the mall and the italian ice/pretzel stand. I used to love to ride the train and the boats. In the winter time you would freeze and unfreeze as you went from store to store. I worked there in a small retail store in the 80's after it was enclosed. I miss the open air malls, the noise volume and stale air makes me nuts after a while in the closed malls. Now it's morphed again with Target, Century 21, Whole Foods and the smaller stores are outlet stores for bigger chains;Nike,Disney..

Definitely prior to 1967, when the Forum Diner (now gone) was built in the green space in the foreground.
