This was architect Victor Gruen's fist mall...it was considered a magnificent masterpiece when it opened. A few years later, Southdale opened as the world's first enclosed mall...it too was designed by Gruen.

I suggest that anyone interested in malls read this book about Victor Gruen. The rise of malls in America is largely due to his efforts.

For what it's worth, the big-@$$ anchor in the middle was Hudson's (now Marshall Field's). They also had Kresge. Later, Mainstreet (later Kohl's, now an arcade), JCPenney (now empty), Target (still open), TJ Maxx (now empty), and Monkey Wards (now National Wholesale Liquidators) were added.
