Sunrise Shopping Center (aka The Galleria Mall)

Ft. Lauderdale, Florida - 1960s

Here's a vibrant color postcard photo of the Jordan Marsh store looming high in the distance, above and anchoring a portion of the venerable Sunrise Shopping Center (as it was originally known) complex, along with a sweeping view of the beautiful surrounding areas. This shot looks West towards the shopping center, from the Intracoastal Waterway seen in the foreground.

In 1980 the Sunrise Shopping Center was fully enclosed, redeveloped and renamed The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale. I still prefer "Sunrise Shopping Center" myself, though.

  1. Why did they have to change the name from something nice and creative to something worthy of the "Zzzzzzzs"? doesn't make sense.

I just love the blue that comes out in this photo.

  2. Correction: that view is looking west. That's the ocean in the background. Building on the Intercoastal near boat is now a Borders.

  3. docjhp is incorrect the photo is facing west but the area near the boat is now a DoubleTree Hotel.

  4. That's not the ocean, it is the intracostal as the original poster said.

  5. I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale. This picture was definitely looking west from the intercoastal. In the foreground is Creighton's Restaurant that was located right on the Intercoastal. It was always a special occasion to visit this restaurant! You could go for a tour on the large boat that was docked at the restaurant.

  7. I used to work at a Fotomat that was located in the parking lot of the shopping center. Ft Lauderdale has changed so much from the days when I lived there!

  8. I used to live behind Sunrise Shopping Center on Middle River Drive on the water in the late 50's & early 60's. The picture is looking West with Creightons Restaurant situated on the water. That is the Intra-Coastal waterway and for those of you who can remember, right across the water from Creightons, on the East side of the water, was Lyle Lee's Water Ski School. Then it became LaClub International and so on and so on. In the picture you can see The Jordan Marsh building. I bought my first Beach Boys record (Surfin USA) there. I could go on and on, but you get the picture. It was great back then. You will never see anything again like Ft. Lauderdale back in the 50's and 60's. It was one of the very unique places on this planet and for those of you who can remember it...you'll agree.

  9. WASN'T CREIGHTON'S CHANGED TO CHRIS WAGNER'S SEVEN PILLARS RESTAURANT IN THE MID 1960'S. MY PARENTS AND I CAME FROM WEST PALM BEACH ON FRIDAY'S JUST FOR THAT HEAVENLY SEAFOOD BUFFET. WE ALSO USED TO STAY AT THE OLD ANACAPRI MOTEL (WITH THE FAMOUS FOUNTAIN IN THE SHALLOW END). I HAVE PICS DATING BACK TO 1957 OF OUR FAMILY TAKING A MINI VACATION. SURE MISS THOSE LANDMARKS, BUT PROGRESS IS PROGRESS-RIGHT? ALSO MISS WOLFIES-THE BESTTTTT FOOD EVER!!!!
