Manitowoc, Wisconsin - November 28, 1974 It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Mid-Cities Mall Shopping Center, and this groovy vintage newspaper ad proves it!
Mid-Cities Mall opened in 1968, was renamed Lakeview Centre in the '80s (and then later, Lakeview Plaza), before eventually closing up shop for good in 2000, according to
Wikipedia. But more on this mall is coming soon. For now, just enjoy the cool Holiday ad.

Oh yeah! 70's advertising in all its groovy glory! Love this ad.
ReplyDeleteI recently cleaned up and made the Wikipedia entry on this mall more organized.
ReplyDeleteThe mall is obviously still closed, and deteriorating, judging by what I saw of it this past October. JCPenney is still there, holding their own. (I have a feeling though within the next year or two, they'll build out a new freestanding store in Manitowoc's new Harbor Town Centre on the southwest side near the interstate.) It's starting to remind me a little of Dixie Square, but without all the boarded up windows and smashed in walls.
Manitowoc also has another mall across the street to the north, Edgewater Mall. Both actually co-existed nicely, but both have died for the most part in recent years.
The Woolworths here, basing on what I seen of it in pictures, was a fairly sizeable store, taking up half of the frontside of the mall's inline space. (It had an exterior front entrance as well.)
Going by the names on this ad, Mid-Cities was of the local/regional flavor. Edgewater balanced this out when they opened in 1979, having a heavier emphasis on national stores, along with different anchors H.C. Prange Co. and Prange-Way.
