Belknap Mall

Belmont, New Hampshire - circa 1970s

Here's another mall not covered here yet. The Belknap Mall, the lone enclosed mall in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. The above photo (which I believe dates to the '70s) was taken before a late '80s expansion, which added a Zayre store to the back end. Dead Malls has a short history page if you'd like to know more (they're apparently calling it dead).

Though I list the mall's history going to the present (for the place is still there), it appears it's currently got a lot of vacancies and/or non-retail tenants filling its floorspace, so it's not exactly a thriving, fully-functioning shopping mall right now.

  1. It's a mall? It looks like an office park.
It doesn't look like they are stuggling, according to their Website. They have some vacancies, but nothing major. Although, if Wal*Mart moved to town, this place would be an Indian bingo hall.

  2. I'm only going by what I read, and according to deadmalls.com (in an entry posted September 3, 2006) it's somewhat struggling:

"The mall from the outside appears healthy; however the stores inside that lack outside entrances are largely vacant or taken by non-traditional tenants".

That's certainly never a good thing.

  4. That's a great pic! I've been going to the Lakes Region of New Hampshire from New York City since I was a little kid in the 60's. Shaw's is a major supermarket chain in the New England area. This Shaw's has been there since the mall opened (70's?). I remember when this was a thriving mall. I was there this past July and couldn't believe how dead the place was. It has to be half vacant. The biggest draw other than Shaw's appears to be the Dunkin Donuts which is located in the front of the parking lot on Route 3. There are Walmarts, factory outlets, a BJ'S and a Target and another Shaw's within 5 miles of the mall but it still stands. Not sure how it survives...

  5. this mall used to be almost dead but within the last year they have added so many stores. like a verizon wireless, and ice cream store with ice cream to die for. they just recently brought in quiznos.they also just put in a clothing store called maurices that actually has decent womens clothing and the marketing events sre great. it has gotten so much more lively within the past year.
