May Company Shopping Center

Carlsbad, California - '60s or '70s?

Vintage postcard advertisement showing the radiant interior of the Finell Jewelers store, in the May Company Shopping Center (researching more info on this mall right now--if it's still around, the name is changed, I believe).

  1. The only May Company that I can recall being down there is the one in Carlsbad's Plaza Camino Real that opened in 1969.

Carlsbad has been a relatively small town and there was never one downtown.

  2. It looks more '60s than '70s, but the heavy dose of harvest gold suggests '70s more.

  3. Yes, it's still around and going strong in spite of another area just northwest (across Highway 78) that includes a Wal Mart and Best Buy. It's been upgraded and modernized more than once...

  4. Thats what I thought. So this could be Plaza Camino Real. The Robinsons-May there is slated for closure or already has closed I beleive.

  5. Looking at the Westfield Plaza Camino Real Website......

Just as I thought. Plaza Camino Real, which opened in 1969.

Finell's Jewlery is still there today.

  7. This Finell's was immediately outside of the May Co store on the far east end of the Plaza Camino Real. The stores were built in 1969. Finells had a decidedly older feel in the style, but fit the time. It was not far from a mall-based Bob's Big Boy, B Dalton Books, and a Jacobson's clothing store. The Finells was stunning. In the 1979/80 expansion of the mall, Finell's moved west to the newly added section, just across from The Broadway Department Store. Finell's new store was smaller and less extravagant. They were also a long time tennant, outliving most other mall stores.
