I actually read this as a preteen. It didn't really live up to my hopes (in fact, as I recall a lot of the story doesn't even take place at the mall), but there are a few bits that were good stuff. It's a lot along the same lines as the movies Chopping Mall and Phantom of the Mall: Eric's Revenge -- in other words, it's an acquired taste.
