WHERE did that come from?!?!?! 1st the Kresge in-store music, now the patch. The bittersweet synchronicity is killing me. I'm tracking the sad demolition of a mid-century shopping center in Jennings, MO, which included my beloved childhood Kresge's. (See http://tobybelt.blogspot.com/2005/07/northland-demolition-continued.html for onepiece of the puzzle) As I've been salvaging pieces of the former Kresge's (a wall clock, a theromstat, a piece of the display window), you've been tossing Kresge's photos and ultra-rare souvenirs my way. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. But thank you.
I DO remember Kresge! and K-Mart! Dig this have you put up the former Yakima Mall on deadmalls.com? Now that I have a camera I'll take some pix, they are actually tearing bits of it down! It hasn't functioned as a mall in at least three years. Now it's the location of a business called Adaptis, an outbound telesales center, and the Maytag call center where my son works. Maytag isn't bad at all, they replaced ClientLogic in there. The big thing is there is no mall now and it makes business downtown in the Yakima Gulag rather pathetic. I'll be putting pictures of the downtown area up on my own blog soon, feel free to link to those when it happens.
My mother used to work at the Kresge Lunch Counter! We could never understand why we couldn't just order off the menu at home. Thanks for posting this.
When I was growing up in the early '80's, the Maryvale Mall in west Phoenix still had a Kresge although there was a K-Mart down the street. It was probably one of the last.
My great aunt started at Kresge as a clerk and then stayed on with them once they became Kmart. She worked her way up through the ranks and eventually retired from Kmart after years as a store manager and then a district manager. We always got the coolest, hard-to-get toys from her for Christmas because she was privvy to them before the customers! My brother & I got to stay in Kmart after hours while she worked and the store was closed. That was such a charge as a kid.
That is a cool patch, I work for Kmart and just moved from detroit. I own a teal work smock that has that has that same patch. A few older people still recognize what store that came from including a few of my managers...former Kresge managers
Can someone please tell me how to make the pork sandwich that was served at the Kresge lunch counter? My mom wants to know how to make this sandwich. She says it was the best pork sandwich she ever had, not to mention that it was a great value!!
I've checked malls everywhere, cannot find anything on my old mall, page and woodson roads in overland mo 63114, hung out there as a kid in the 60s, they had kresges penneys, arlans, a& p and several smaller stores. They blew off the front and made a strip mall now. I would love to have any imfo or photos of the old mall. Thanks. Bob bobbyhforyou@aol.com
totally gorgeous!!

There was a Kresge in downtown Belleville, Ontario at least until the mid-1980s.
ReplyDeleteI remember that store in Spring Valley California. My Aunt and I would ride the #25 bus to get there. Those were the days....
