Gulfgate Shopping Center

Houston, Texas - 1950's

  1. Gulfgate was cool because it had this plastic, colored umbrella motif (if memory serves correctly). I saw many Disney movies (Dumbo, Bambi, etc.) at the theater. We shopped there until Almeda, and later Baybrook Malls were built.

  2. Wow, how weird to see Gulfgate in all its glory...I only know it from the past 10 years or so. Very sad now.

  3. My grandmother used to walk us across the pedestrian bridge to shop at Weingarten's and see movies when I was a kid.

  4. Oh my gosh! My heart jumped out of my chest when I saw this picture. I've seen every phase Gulfgate went through, right up to the huge HEB circus tents today. This was great to show my kids how malls got their start. Great picture!

  5. There used to be a hobby shop on lower level of the mall. I remember going there with my dad and being facinated by all the slot cars they had in a glass case by the counter. I had a hard time choosing one. Frizzell Pontiac was across the street on Woodridge Drive. My Folks bought a 1968 Pontiac Bonneville wagon there. Great memories.

  6. Does anyone have a picture of the drive-in theatre that was there in 1960?
