Briarwood Mall

Ann Arbor, Michigan. Late '70s--early '80s.

This mall just got its overdue (according to the owners) modern-day makeover and remodel a couple years back. Before that, the interior had managed to remain largely unchanged from its funky out-dated '70s look. But they decided to change all that and now it's updated like all the other malls. Whoopee.

They do still have some nice fountains, though. And hey, does anyone know if this cool sculpture is still there?

Current website.

  1. I can't decide if people in the '70s were coming down off all the drugs they did in the '60s, or if they just simply had bad taste. Either way, I love it!

    This is pretty cool, Keith:

  2. I'm pretty sure that the sculpture is still there, but off at one of the ends of the mall and not in the center of it like this picture suggests.

  3. westminster Mall in Westminster, CA had/has a sculpture just like that, but its red. it used to be inside the mall, but like otterpop said, they moved it to another area. maybe who ever did it made several pieces in malls across america...

  4. The sculpture was there as of 2001, when I was last there (which was, I think, the last time I was in a shopping mall).

  5. Chris: I'm with you--I don't care how or why they did it, I'm just glad they did! :)

And thanks for that link. Yes, I've seen that and it is too cool for words, man. I should add that to my links here.

And thanks to everyone else for the additional notes and comments on the sculpture!

  6. whoopee is right....just another step in the homogenization of america - everything the same everywhere you go. what's wrong with a little creativity, a little STYLE? can you imagine something like this being built today?

  7. They actually just took it down. The mall is getting another re-vamp to modernize it again. I just saw the sculpture all crated up to get shipped out a couple weeks ago, it's gone now.
