International Malls: Place Ste-Foy Shopping Centre

Quebec, Canada - 1965

O
ld multi-view postcard of the positively retro-beautiful Place Ste-Foy Shopping Centre in Quebec, Canada, back in the mid-sixties--when it still looked this Swinging (it doesn't today, in case you were wondering), before its many makeovers and modernizing over the ensuing years. Check the huge birdcage there in the bottom picture!

Below are links to my previous entries on this cool Canadian mall (or Shopping Centre, as they like to refer to it), which was originally built in 1958. Here's Place Ste-Foy's current website (which I can't read).

International Malls: Sherway Gardens Shopping Centre

Toronto, Ontario, Canada - circa 1970s

Colorful retro '70s postcard view of the entrance sign and interior of the Sherway Gardens shopping centre in Toronto. I'll refrain from calling the interior "gaudy", but I'll just say it's definitely some bold '70s mall decor style at its finest! And I mean that in a good way. :)

International Malls: Yorkdale Shopping Centre (aka Yorkdale Mall)

Toronto, Ontario, Canada - 1967

Retro interior view of the stylishly beautiful and swanky Yorkdale Shopping Centre (aka Yorkdale Mall) in Toronto. I'll gladly set the malls of America aside momentarily, to make room for a photo like this. And thanks very much to MOA reader, Jason Cawood, for it! Some Wikipedia info:
"The mall was opened in 1964 and was the first to include two major Canadian department stores, Simpson's and Eaton's, under the same roof. At the time of its opening, and for several years afterwards, it was the largest enclosed mall in the world. Yorkdale generated a tremendous amount of excitement when it first opened.

Before Yorkdale, most people in the Toronto area did their major shopping downtown. Yorkdale was at the edge of the urbanized city, with only farmland around it. However, it was strategically located next to the interchange of Highway 401 and the proposed Spadina Expressway as well as the nearby Dufferin Street; all three major routes have ramps dedicated to serving the mall."

International Malls: Yorkdale Shopping Centre

Toronto, Ontario, Canada - circa 1960s

The Yorkdale Shopping Centre (aka Yorkdale Mall) was such a groovy shopping mall at one time! This retro postcard proves it. Every photo I see of it I love. (I'm talking about the vintage Yorkdale Shopping Centre, of course.) Looks like it was one heck of a swanky shopping destination back then.

International Malls: Sears in San Juan

San Juan, Puerto Rico - 1972

Sears Shopping Center in the Hato Rey business district in San Juan, Puerto Rico. 1972. If I didn't know it, I'd assume this was a shopping center somewhere in the U.S., wouldn't you? Looks like maybe Florida or something. Either way it just goes to show that retail Swank is universal! ...Or was, at any rate.

And man, that classic old-style Sears script logo sure looks nice. Always reminds me of my childhood whenever I see it--similar to Montgomery Ward, JCPenney, and Kmart, to name a few more.
