Mall Sign: Lakewood Shopping Center

Lakewood, California - circa 1950s

T
he very bold and distinctive looking entrance sign at the Lakewood Shopping Center (or just Lakewood Center) as seen in the 1950s. This photo find comes courtesy of Brian Neuroth. Thanks, Brian! This is a great sign design to study, where less (in this case anyway), is obviously more.

I grew up in Bellflower and rode the Long Beach transit bus to work at the Chic Accessories store at this mall back in the early 80's. I fell in love for the first time while working at the mall. Ah memories.

Anybody figure what happened to the admin for this site after? At least pass the site along to someone else to update, etc.

Don't really know what year the last comment was from since the date stamp doesn't show that, but here's a little message from 2009:

Keith disappeared. That was fine, I guess. People were disappointed, a little worried for his well-being, and generally just carrying on in the comments section of the last blog entry. I should know, I was one of them back in good ol' 2008, if I'm not mistaken. Then comments started to mysteriously disappear. Someone thought it might have been an automated thing weeding out comments with foul language. Perhaps. But then I'm pretty damn sure Keith came back, and that bastard didn't have the courtesy to at least make a post saying that he was done with this site and giving all of the dedicated followers some closure. No. You know what he did? He blocked further comments on the most recent entries. The fellow mall lovers couldn't even converse anymore! Who was it hurting? We were just speculating and entertaining each other. Now I'm not 100% sure it was Keith but I'm just willing to bet. Even if it wasn't, whoever it was could've posted an entry saying not to bother coming back anymore. My conclusion is that whoever it was is just a giant asshole.

So, I'm guessing this site is toast then. Anyone up for creating a Malls of America Part Two?
