Hibbing, Minnesota - 1971 Woolworth store at Mesabi Mall, right around the time of the mall's original Grand Opening in 1971.
Note that this Woolworth facade is sporting the chain's then-new American style logo with the F. W. dropped from the name (you can also see it
here). This is the groovier seventies Woolworth logo design I grew up with and it sure brings back lots of great childhood memories!

That's the era where they had the new supersized Woolworth stores that were almost mini-Woolcos.
ReplyDeleteI do not think I have ever seen that Woolworth's logo. Very patriotic and in time for the fourth!
ReplyDeleteNot as familiar with that logo as I am with their full-named "F.W. Woolworth Co.". Here in Wisconsin, most Woolworths were still downtown, rather than anchoring malls.
ReplyDeleteVery cool blog you have here. :) I came in search of a photo of the escalator at Sunvalley Mall in Concord, CA, and came away with that and so much more. :)
ReplyDeleteI also remember Woolworth's, and alpha beta. Great pictures you have found here! Where did you find them all?
I love this blog. I had forgotten that woolworths was one of my first places of employment as a very young teen. It was a great place to work.
ReplyDeleteIs this the same store that later became Pamida and is now a farm supply store?
ReplyDeleteYes. It's now L&M Fleet Supply.
DeleteI think what I dig is seeing this old-style 70's architecture looking brand-new. Looking at that pic, I did not even think 70's at first because it was all so new and shiny. Some of it still does look new to me.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely, J.T., and was thinking the same thing.
ReplyDeleteDidi: Yeah, it is sort of patriotic, isn't it? :) Actually, I had a couple cool photos in mind to post for the 4th but couldn't find the dang things at post-time! Grrrr. Still not sure where they got off to...
J at www.jellyjules.com: Thanks! Glad you discovered the blog. :D The pics & postcards come from anywhere and everywhere I can find them (and I've been looking and collecting for years), both online and off. Some are kindly donated by super-cool readers as well (who become my favorite readers and vintage mall pals, hehe).
Anonymous: Thanks and I'm glad you're here. :)
Bobby: I have no idea. Hopefully someone will be able to answer that one for ya at some point.
Yeah, that is now L&M Fleet Supply, a nice store. Thanks to that and Super One, it's now the most successful mall in town, with Irongate Mall looking pretty sad in comparison, despite its larger size.
ReplyDeleteAs I recall Woolworth anchored several smaller city 1970's era malls in Minnesota. Thunderbird Mall in Virginia comes to mind. I think also the mall in International Falls. Other end of Mesabi Mall where Super One now is was a Red Owl grocery.
ReplyDeleteI remember two Woolworth stores had that same logo in New Orleans on Canal Street at Rampart and Gentily at Foy .
