Pony Village Mall

North Bend, Oregon - 1960's or early '70s

Can't see a whole heck of a lot of this shopping center from here, but it still looks kind of swanky to me. And I bet it was back in those days. I'll see if I can't scrounge up some interior shots soon. I'd love to what the mall looked like on the inside in its glory years. A lot of the architecture I've seen from the '60s and '70s out there on the Oregon Coast and surroundings, had a really cool rustic, pine-y vibe to it that I dig. I just like the feel of it all.

Anyway, in the main shot at the top, there's a Safeway on the far right, I can tell that much, and you can see the rather unique A-frame like entrance there in the middle, both of which I've blown up here for a better look. Though they didn't bear up well to much magnification, at least we can see things a little closer.

Here's Pony Village's current website.

I love those old-school A-frame Safeways. They used to have a lot of those in Seattle when I lived there, but they all got nuked and turned into the new super-Safeways, which are nice to shop in, but blocky, ugly, and without any character.

Interesting design. This is one of the few malls which actually looks good from the outside.

Are Safeways stores commonly found in the US? I have always associated the chain more with Britain than the US.

I bet generations of little girls were soooooo disappointed to find out there weren't ponies everywhere. I know I would have been.

But that's one interesting looking mall. We used to have stores here in Milwaukee when I was growing up in the '70s called Treasure Island (no relation to the ones out East, I don't think) that had roofs kind of like that. I always liked shopping there because of the roof. (I was a weird kid. What can I say?)

They have Safeways in Britain? It's headquartered in Pleasanton, California. It's either Safeway or Albertons, with little eles, to shop for groceries in northern California.
Anyway, I wish Pony Village posted a map of their layout on their website. The mall is small, so I'm curious.
We still have some old A-frame Safeways. I remember Alpha Beta started going with that same roof design in the late sixties, too. I think that is when Safeway changed to the curvy roof design.

Britain has quite a few Safeways, at least in the London area.

They even had a few stores in Germany. There was one in my hometown which held on at least until the 1990s, though I think it's something else now.

According to Storetrax, that mall still has some of its A-frame-ness left. Most of the tenants seem to be second and third tier stores.

Here are interior photos of some of the vintage storefronts and stairwells in Pony Village Mall (shot on Sept. 5, 2007).

I have a store in Pony Village Mall called Fiddlesticks Gifts. My storefront and some of the others are still the original wood. I'll shoot some pictures and provide a link to them? We have been in business in the Coos Bay area since 1980. Here are some photos of Coos Bay, Oregon Commercial Buildings (then and now) . Roll your mouse over the images and see the beautiful buildings. This downtown area sort of died when Pony Village Mall was built. Now the downtown is becoming revived. The new Pony Village Mall owners are planning to "renew the mall" with a more up to date look.
