San Bruno, California - circa 1970s
Now called The Shops At Tanforan, the Tanforan Shopping Center (or Tanforan Park Mall) originally opened in 1971, and then was rebuilt and updated in 2003. Current anchors include Sears, Barnes & Noble, Target, and JCPenney. The vintage interior photo above is from one of the mall's 1970s postcards.
Apparently it's a pretty swanky place to shop today. Here's a description of its current-day atmosphere and decor from Bigmallrat.com:

ReplyDeleteIf you mean the lady in the beige suit, her bag doesn't look that huge to me. You could probably still buy a handbag that size somewhere. Even the style doesn't seem that out of date.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Cora, the purse isn't that huge. I have seen people carry bigger and it is usually because they put their entire life chronicles in there. Like a friend of mine used to say, "The bigger your purse is, the more crap you can stuff in." She's right. That's why my purses have gotten smaller over the years.

ReplyDeleteLove the three Thunderbirds in that shot! Wonder if they were being raffled off or something. I have a '79 T-bird, the last year of that style, which was in production from 1977, so that gives a clearer indication of when that photo was taken.
ReplyDeleteAnother piece of San Bruno, CA history, the Tanforan Park Shopping Center was built on a former site of horse race track. I remember when it opened the racing horse was part of the logo.
ReplyDeletethe remade mall sucks. they redid it with the idea of putting all sorts of upscale stores, because they looked at the cost of houses and such adn thought "oh wow we can make it a super high end mall" not realizing of course that housing prices in the bay area are always high, but that doesn't mean their plan would work.
ReplyDeleteit's half empty, and most of the stores suck. and part of the rebuild was to accommodate the BART station, but then in a classic dustup, had a chain link fence BLOCK access to the mall, thus requiring people to cut through a police station lot to get in.

I grew up in the Bay Area and this mall I was familiar with. Went to visit over the holidays and things sure have changes. I currently live in Phoenix, Arizona and the photos of the Thunderbirds was from 1978.

ReplyDeletethis used to be an decent mall, but the mall has changed so much, now days it is a ghetto mall, with target as its anchor. filled with hispanics and other immigrants. the kind of mall you want to shower after being in.
