Mall Sign: Vineland Shopping Center

Vineland, New Jersey - 1973

The Vineland Shopping Center and its swanky signage, in this fantastic vintage snapshot taken back in 1973. Photo is courtesy of this flickr photoset, which also contains an interesting side-by-side shot of this image, along with an updated one of the same sign (yes, it's still there) at the Vineland Shopping Center, taken much more recently. (Surprise! Though similar, the vintage version's still cooler.)

  1. I grew-up in Millville which is one town over from Vineland. I remember that old sign and it is still there even thougth the old theater (once known as the Vineland 4) is now completely closed. It was being run as a "second-run" movie theater for the past few years up until recently. Even more depressing is the beatiful art-deco Landis theater a little further down the road (Landis Ave.) that has been closed since the mid-'80s. I went to one of the last showings there and it was even at that time a stunning building inside and out. There's a commitee trying to save it since it is a town landmark, but over a decade of trying has only kept the wrecking balls away. Great picture! Brings back memories!

  2. Swanky signage, ferris wheel, marching majorettes, what more can you ask for?

Though The Last Tango in Paris is an unexpected programming choice for a small town theatre.

  3. Actually, Vineland is the largest city in New Jersey. In size, not population.

  6. I'm a native of Vineland. By the time of that picture, that sign already had seen better days.
If you haven't noticed already, the sign has a piece missing in the middle of the vertical column of tenants due to vacancies in the plaza. And that boring square Pantry Pride sign replaced a cooler, angular Food Fair sign (like the green logo here: http://www.cruisecloseouts.com/Food%20Fair_Pantry%20Pride.htm) when the chain changed names. The red arrows on top blinked from left to right in sequence like a '68 Cougar's tail lights, and the large red arrow at right had three neon rings that blinked from the inside out.
Over the years, the decline in the state of that sign has sadly mirrored Vineland as a whole.

  7. I grew up in NJ in the 1960s and 70s and we had a shopping center much like the one pictured here in Vineland. These outdoor or sidewalk shopping centers were great for suburbanites as they were usually located within a mile or so of the house developments. The signage was wonderful, much more interesting than the bland signage of today. The stores had great signage as well - Food Fair, W.T. Grant, Drug Fair, Barton's Candy, BiLow Liquors, etc. (these were in our shopping center from 1960 to 1972 and the last survivor was Drug Fair until 2008). Architecture will never again be as interesting as it was in the 1960s.

  15. I used to love banging cashiers at Food Town. One time I banged this slut so hard, she threw up. All over her cash register and two other customers.

  16. Vineland..WOW!

Quick question: can someone get Rob's mom off of my dick? she acts like her mouth is glued to it. i treat her like shit and she comes back for more. she has a permanent cum waterfall running off her chin down between her gigantic melons all over her hairy vag. I'm tired of getting kicked out of funerals with her.
