Sears Optical Department (1970s)
Here's a retro '70s TV commercial for the Optical Department at Sears, in all its weird retro '70s glory. Man, I remember the catchy little jingle in these Sears ads very well from when I was a kid. As for the woman in this one... can you say Stepford Wives?
Wow. I remember that commercial. That "Cozy nook" line had me being able to smell the shag carpet. Cool post.
ReplyDeleteCan we also say the most unfashionable eyeglasses ever???
ReplyDeleteThe woman looks great in those clothes which also look great but not that godawful eyewear.
BTW, this post is very fitting since I freakishly and accidently broke my eyeglasses this morning. LOL!
Dozens of fashion frames available and all equally ugly.
ReplyDeleteThough my Mom actually had glasses like that in the 1970s (not from the optical department at Sears, though). She might still have them lying around as a backup pair somewhere for all I know.
By the way, is the Stepford lady in the commercial someone famous? She seems vaguely familiar.
Um, my Mom, in her 80's now...still wears those frames...God love her...
ReplyDeletewhat were they thinking? I like the 'formal" pair she had on with the white gown.
ReplyDeleteI did not realize that Charles Nelson Rielly had such influence in eyewear fashion.
Kev
Those frames weren't ugly when they came out. They were very hip and fashionable. In fact, they evolved into larger and more uglier, ahem, fashionable eyewear of the Eighties (ever watch a rerun of Murder She Wrote?). We need a Eyeglasses of America blog!
ReplyDeleteAnd who is that woman? Does she have an accent or is it just me? Typical Americans don't enunciate like she does.

ReplyDeleteDon't I know it!
"(ever watch a rerun of Murder She Wrote?)."
Not lately, but, unfortunately, I was watching an episode of Who's the Boss? the other night and Angela had the same exact pair! LOL!
Judith Light in Who's The Boss!?!?!? I choked on my Oodles of Noodles when I read that! :)
ReplyDeleteShe wore some BIG glasses, just like those advertised here. It showed America she was an independent successful woman with a career outside the home. Well, the GLASSES gave that impression. The commercial seemed to try to make the same statement (when combined with that working woman hair style).
Thankfully, Judith Light dumped the glasses when she began her stint on Lifetime.

ReplyDeleteLMAO!!! Yes, unfortunately.
"It showed America she was an independent successful woman with a career outside the home."
Really??? I always thought that the glasses actually showed America that poor Angela had zero fashion sense as opposed to maybe her mother Mona. LOL!

Actually maybe even earlier than that? I was watching a very early WTB? eppie and I don't recall her glasses being that big in the later years of the show.
I used to have glasses like that when I was little, : ( How scary!
ReplyDeleteI am sad to report that I've seen people my age (20s) wear glasses like that now to be cool and "ironic." I was in at a comedy club in the East Village in NY the other night and saw a guy with glasses similar to those-- he looked like David Koresh!
ReplyDeleteI showed my cousins this and they all laughed at the "cozy nook" line and the "shake 'em up on the job" line. They also agreed it was also slightly creepy.
