Vintage ad - 1959
"America's family shopping cart." This is some great late '50s retro advertising art. I cropped this image out of an old faded Ford Motor Company print ad. Reason being of course, the super cool picture it features, taken at an unnamed shopping center at the time, somewhere in America (who knows where).
This shopping center is actually the Sears Shopping Center in Lincoln Park, Michigan, approximately 8 miles from the Ford Motor Company Headquarters in Dearborn. I grew up 8 blocks from here and would recognize Sims and Father and Son together, as they were like that until the late 70's. Wow, that brings me back

ReplyDeleteFor a minute there it reminded me of the DeVeaux Shopping Plaza in Toledo that is near where my late grandmother lived.
No carseats! Today you wouldn't see kids playing in the front seat. Too funny!

I hate changes! (it was fun to be in the front seat as a 5 year old, sort of a luxury if no grown ups were to take it).
This shopping complex looks EXACTLY like the Old Sears Shopping Center in the South side of San Antonio, Texas. It might have been built around the Late 50's or early 60's? This beautiful store with timeless architecture and exterior design complete with Shrubs the ran the length of the covered walkways around Sears. The Auto Service Center and Key store were two separate buildings from the Department Store.The interior was graced by Marble Flooring or it might have been Terrazzo Flooring? Yes it was a simple single story design, but it was a reminder of vintage of retail marketing. The Department Store was demolished in early 90's and replaced by the Texas Grocery Giant, H.E.B. The Shopping complex which was adjacent to Sears is still there. Some remembrance of the old Sears design can still be seen on the complex.
