Cross County Shopping Center

Yonkers, New York - circa 1950s

The quite bustling looking exterior and parking lot of the swanktastic Cross County Shopping Center, the oldest and largest shopping mall in Westchester County, according to its Wikipedia page.

The mall is currently anchored by a Macy's and Sears store, and undergoing a major renovation and remodeling makeover. But even when that's all done, I betcha a million mall pretzels I'll still prefer the vintage version seen in this postcard photo. :)

  2. Inquiring minds want to know (and are too lazy to find the answer)... what is the high-rise part of the mall? Office building? Hotel? Medical center? Apartments?

  3. My guess is it may be an office building for the mall. Golf Mill in Chicago has something similar like that in the southwest corner of their mall.

  4. CROSS COUNTY....another of my Mall Hall Of Fame inductees. This was the first shopping mall in the New York City metro area??

By the way, the 8-story, high-rise structure was originally the Cross County Hospital. Malls of this period were, after all, one-stop, everything in one place deals.

The hospital closed some years back, and is currently used as retail space (on the bottom). The rest, is leased out as office space.

  5. Cross County Shopping Center featured two Woolworth's- the old one and the BIG one. The " old one" or smaller one was standard WW with lunch counter, etc. The 2 story newer " bigger one" had the large pet department, larger toy section and large houseplant section.
