circa late '50s early '60s
A cool exterior shot of a Belk-Lindsey store, at an unnamed mall or shopping center, most likely somewhere in Florida or North Carolina, I'm not really sure. What I do know is that I dig this picture. I like the simple yet bold signage on the store's facade. Some might think it's a little on the ugly side, but I think it's kind of swanky looking myself.
That's definately Florida, possibly from the Tampa-St. Petersburg area. There were never any Belk-Lindsey stores in the Carolinas to my recollection.

I don't think it's ugly at all. The cars are gorgeous and the building itself has some unusual allure that makes it look like the inside of a 60s or 70s split level home kitchen.
ReplyDeleteBelk is some confusing to me... There are a number of Belk dash [insert another name here] stores. I don't quite understand why they don't have one simple name.

Perhaps they are trying to keep the department stores names that they ate for lunch and dinner hanging around to appease the folks who may protest over a complete name change?
ReplyDeleteBelk expanded by taking on business partners in various towns to open stores, and those patners typically had their names included in the store names. When they reorganized their corporate structure in 1998, most of the hyphenated names went away.

What I like about this picture is that there are so few cars on the parking! And it is free I guess. Those were great times!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I think that this is Britton Plaza on the southside of Tampa on South Dale Mabry near MacDill AFB. Belk-Lindsey was the anchor store. There was a theater, a Neisner's, Cloth World, and other wonderful stores in this great mall.

You are correct. My husband and his friend worked in that Belks. That little Chevy Covair belonged to his friend. This read 1963.

DeleteI was going to say that this was Belk-Lindsey in the Bellaire Plaza in Daytona Beach. That center had a large Woolworth's, an Ivey's (Little Store), and a Publix. There was also an Ivey's and Furchgott's in the so - called downtown area of Daytona Beach. great memories! But I stand corrected I must be wrong.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Cypress Plaza Shopping Center in Pompano Beach location as noted above. I grew up just south of there. I believe the entire complex has been replaced with apartments.
