San Mateo, California - circa 1957This view of the Hillsdale Shopping Center is slightly left of the
last one I posted. Now we can see the store to the left of Hartfields, which looks to read "Collins Pharmacy", I think. Can anyone corroborate that?
Additionally, there's a Macy*s anchor, J.J. Newberry store, Hartfields, and a Leed's shoe store (to the right of Newberry).

Holy crap! I've never seen those hills in the background before. It's all developed now.

That is Collins Pharmacy in the picture. If you go back and watch the video you will see it in there too. The pictures are great and the video made my head explode!
ReplyDeleteI think George Kelley made his name in Travel Documentaries some of which are shown on TMC from time to time.
The cars, the way people dressed, the stores, i just want to jump though my computer and go back to that past.

Thanks for the info Kev!
ReplyDeleteEr, I forgot to look at my Hillsdale video here to double check on that name. Duh! :D
I love this retro chopping city. This is an example of how great these places used to be.
ReplyDeleteMost of the Bufano sculptures are still inside Hillsdale. They have this giant candy-cane like poles that mark each one.

I spent my entire youth at this mall, in the 1970s, starting from when I was in 4th grade. My sister and sister in law worked at that Macy's, I remember going to Leeds many times with my mom to buy shoes, and I hung out at the JJ Newberry's counter with my friends after school countless days where I ordered a plate of french fries and coke. Man it is cool to see this picture. I just looked at the current website to see if any of these original small stores are still there, but they arent. I always loved Melarts, which had the slide to the bottom floor--no longer there. I wish they had never enclosed the mall in 1982, but such is life. Thanks so much for the photo!
ReplyDeleteIf you ever say to yourself, "wooda, coulda, shoulda", think of Ronald Wayne who gave up 10 percent of Apple Computer for $2,300.00
