Kicking it eighties style with this one, fellow mallrats, in this sunny exterior photograph taken from the parking lot of the Burdines department store at Dadeland Mall, in Miami (in 2005 the Federated owned chain was converted to Macy's). Almost can't see the mall here for the palm trees though, lol.

ReplyDeleteThe mid 80s was about the last great era for malls before the massive changes began in architecture, mega food courts and cookie-cutter aesthetic interiors.
Dadeland still looks exactly like that only the Burdine's sign is a Macy's one!

ReplyDeleteWow, thanks for the trip back in time! I lived near there in the late 70's and that was THE mall. I even got my ears pierced there.
ReplyDeleteDADELAND, hummm. I lived in Miami for two years and, for whatever reason, never went inside of that one. My malls of choice were WESTLAND (dunno why), SKYLAKE and 163Rd STREET (closer to home).
ReplyDeleteAre there any photos in existance of the "Mimo" era [circa-1956] "163RD STREET SHOPPING CENTER"? I posted an article about it on the Mall Hall Of Fame blog.......but, alas, I could find no early-days pictures of the mall anyplace on the www.
I've heard a lot about the early open-air mall, but never seen any images. It must have been gorgeous.
You mean just the store, right Lissette? The mall itself looks nothing like it did in the eighties. Oh, and this is the Kids, Home, and Furniture Store. The flagship is in the middle of the mall.

ReplyDeleteI was a young child living in Coral Gables, Florida when Dadeland was built in the early sixties. We used to call that area "the boonies" There was nothing there at all. When the mall opened it was pretty special to have all those stores under a roof! We had always shopped on Miracle Mile or Sears. I remember the grand dolphin sculptures. I was back there a few years ago years ago and in many ways it has stayed the same, but larger. One thing which threw me though is how the mall used to be the only thing you saw from the road and now you can't see it for all the other businesses built of it.
ReplyDeleteActually, this shot IS of the middle flagship store, formerly Burdines. Macy's turned the old Jordan Marsh into its home and whatever section. THIS shot is the original Burdine's. By the way, this was the END of the mall, until they extended with a new wing, I think around 1970.
