Cincinnati, Ohio - circa 1960
Thanks very much to fellow mall aficionado, Dennis Creech, for the tip on the great aerial photo above (courtesy of Cincinnativiews.net), as well as the work in drawing up the two vintage era Tri-County Mall directory maps I've included below. Obviously they're not complete directories of all the stores, but they do serve as handy overviews of the major anchors during those years. Great stuff, Dennis! Thanks ever so much for the informative e-mails and submissions (I'll get to more of them very soon).

Cool!
ReplyDeleteWith the posting of this TRI-COUNTY info here, I suppose that I've officially made it into the ranks of you guys & gals.....the Mall Bloggers. Nice company!
TRI-COUNTY was such a nifty "googie-style" shopping center, before all the space-age architectural embellishments were ripped out in the big 1990 wreck-o-vation.
The original Shillito's was stunning. I haven't been inside (or even by) the mall in years, so I would imagine that the exterior of that building (what is it now.....a Macy's? ....imagine that!) has had the "ultra-modern" modernized away long ago.
I shall end this first blog post with a question: Is there even any originial "googie" architecture remaining these days (aside from the LAX "Theme Building" or Seattle Space Needle)????
Dennis
I lived in this area when this opened. My dad would take us for a ride between Ohio route 4 and sharonville exits of of I 275, the only part opened. This wa an amazing place in 1960! second shopping center in Cincinnati after Swifton. Swifton died because it wasn't in view of the interstate.
