Probasco’s Fabric Store

Kalamazoo, Michigan - circa '60s or '70s

Not a mall, just an old postcard for some fabric store (Probasco’s) in the shopping district of Kalamazoo, Michigan. But I dig the crazy colors and ugly lighting, which is actually very typical of many stores in those days in terms of look and feel (top photo reminds me of living rooms I've been in back in the '70s!). I'm putting this picture here for its retro ambience.

  1. Lol! I swear to god, our living room and basement DID look something like this growing up! Same kind of overall colors and pattern designs! :D

  2. I remember having to spend what seemed like hours in these types of stores while my mother and sisters shopped for fabric. :(

The only cool thing there was the device they ran the fabric through to measure it's length.

  3. Great colors but god I've always hated fabric stores, no wait, the worst store ever is a linen store, worst nightmare would be to work in a linen store. Its hard to believe people had time in the 70's to make there own clothes. I had an aunt that would always bring my father handmade polyester neckties in the worst colors, he threw them out when she left.

  4. I used to hate sitting in fabric store waiting for Mom, but seeing this photo makes me nostalgic.

  5. Heh...ditto here with the fabric store trips with Mom back in the 70s. At the time, it seemed as though she spent hours browsing through the various fabrics. Thank goodness for the bright colors and wild patterns back then, which at least helped add some stimulation in an otherwise boring store (at least for a young boy). But now that she's gone, a photo like this helps me appreciate the memories of shopping with her, no matter the store.
