North Port Charlotte Plaza

Port Charlotte, Florida - circa 1960s

I like me a good shopping center sign now and then. And that's what this photo is all about, the sign. For all I know this plaza was just a little strip mall or something, I'm not really sure (hardly anything informative about it online as far as I could see), but I just enjoy the bold signage design.

  1. That is a great sign! the Kwik-Chek in the background looks very Winn-Dixie-like as well.

  2. How spooky is this town? The aerial shows what appears to be miles and miles of suburban housing tracts. However, upon closer inspection, there aren't many houses! Mostly streets. Land speculation at its finest!

  3. Steven,

Correct you are! Many of the Winn-Dixie stores in Florida started off as life Kwik-Cheks...

  4. Interesting point there, Scott! Hadn't noticed that. It is kind of spooky now that you mention it (hear the howling wind blowing?).

OK, now I'm all a-scared and stuff looking at this pic.

  6. There's still a Kwik Chek sign on a store in Jasper, TN. I keep failing to get a pic of it, but it's located on TN 150 (Old TN 28) just north of downtown.

  7. No it's not land speculation at all. I'm from Port Charlotte. Many of the houses aren't there because of Hurricane Charley!

Before that you would have a hard time finding an empty lot available.
