I can't make out all the store names on the right side of this shot, but Thom McAn is among them. That chain and Kinney were 'the' shoe stores in malls of the era.
Too bad, stores like Payless grew and became huge in the 1980s, as well as cheap imported shoes one finds in discount stores...drove such names out of the malls.
Oh, and that space with the blue shingled roof motif next to the Harvest House Jr...that was Woolworth's apparel store. Only found in large malls. Brookfield Square had one of these, along with the Harvest House Jr, and a full-sized Woolworth variety store.
As for the mall interior here, it reminds me of our Southridge Mall. I like shots like this. Looks like the place is decked out for the holidays too, with the strings of lights. Very appropriate for this time of year.
I remember there used to be a fun restaurant here called Farrel's (sp?). As a kid we would go here for birthday parties and eat ice cream sundaes. They had games for kids, too.
On the lower right is Buster Brown. Next to it may be a B. Dalton Bookseller.
On the 2nd floor, on the left side is an old wood front Spencer Gifts. We still had one of those around here at the Schuylkill Mall. It went out of business 2 or 3 years ago, and sits there vacant.
After blowing the picture up, I can definately say that its Gordon's Jewelers next to Buster Brown (not B. Dalton). Beyond Thom McAn is the unmistakeable facade of Hickory Farms.
On the left, past the blue-shingled storefront, it almost looks like it says "Lerner Shops". I know Lerner was out there (we had one in a local mall), but I'm not sure if they ever would have had that name up (with the "shops" in it).
Up on the 2nd floor on the right, I see (something) Bros. Perhaps Richman Bros? They were owned by Woolworth, so it's a possibility - seeing as how Woolworth seems to have a big presence in this mall.

This was, as you look from the One Oxford Valley side, the second section from the right, between he escalator and the old spiral ramp. Your are looking toward what used to be Bamberger's.
Anonymous, if you are still around. This picture looks towards where a scene from the Movie "Clean and Sober" was shot. About where the Hickory Farm and Lerner Shops are in the picture.
who else here enjoyed going into the lane bryant dressing rooms and yanking their sausage until they blew their load all over the clothes that were left behind? that's how you make a clearance section right. tuesday tug fest was awesome
Harvest House Jr. - That was the restaurant with Woolworth's, if I'm not mistaken. Some of the best Mac&Cheese I've ever had.

I'm having a hard time figuring this out... but what part of the mall was this picture taken in?

ReplyDeleteWhoever dropped these pictures, could you please drop more if there's room?
