While not shopping malls exactly, I thought I'd highlight some cool vintage dimestore ephemera, since it still manages to evoke the same kinds of memories and feelings. Here are some great old Ben Franklin ads from the '70s! Check out some of these prices, too! :) Hopefully, gazing at these babies will really take you back like they do me. Enjoy...
Great find! Interesting to see that things actually cost about the same now, when adjusted for inflation.
ReplyDeleteUsing the Consumer Price Index Calculator, we can see that:
Canvas basketball shoes:
1976: $3.79
2005: $12.96
That seems about right for that same style of shoe; granted, today, you probably wouldn't use those same shoes for that purpose - you'd be paying a lot more for specially-designed basketball shoes.
Colgate Shaving cream:
1976: 2/.99 ( $0.49 each)
2005: $1.68
I don't use that type of shaving cream anymore, but that seems like that's about right. However, notice that the September 1977 is selling the same stuff for $0.57, an increase of 15%. However, still cheap compared to Gillette, at $0.75/can ($2.57 in 2005).
Very interesting! (ok, maybe not... ;)
i also remember grant department story and murphys down here in florida
ReplyDeleteHoly crap! I just stumbled onto your blog and I love it! I'm really big into retailing and malls too, today as well as in the past. Check out my blog when you get a chance.
ReplyDeleteBen Franklin holds a rather significant place in retail history, as Sam Walton owned several Ben Franklin stores before starting the first Wal-Mart.
ReplyDeletelovely!
