House Beautiful - October 1969
From the October 1969 issue of House Beautiful magazine comes this cool retro ad heralding House Beautiful's alliance with 17 of "America's Great Stores", to help with all your various decorating and decor needs. There's some nifty vintage store names and logos here, from The Bon Marche, B Altman Co., and Jordan Marsh, to Gimbels, Rich's, and Bullock's. Thanks, Jay, for another great submission!

Awesome seeing the old Higbee's logo again. I was born and grew up for a time in Cleveland and remember Higbee's very well.
I visited a couple of those stores in my day... Great memories.
My favorite will always be #13 since I grew up in Atlanta, but I absolutely love #17. I'm always a sucker for the more formal, script-type logos (thank you, Saks!). L.S. Ayres isn't bad either.
I do find it interesting Jordan Marsh had separate logos for the northern and southern stores. Seriously, how much money did they waste on that? Did nobody even think of the concept of "brand recognition" back then?
Based on the above, I'm surprised Gimbels didn't have 3 or 4 different logos in the ad...eeh, that didn't happen until the 80s, though...

Amazing...NONE of them are even around anymore...
As for the Jordan Marsh question...they were seperate divisions that were merged, the FLorida logo designed to match the now defunct and forgotten former company..
As for brand recognition...where has that lead? To MACY'S????
I'm really happy to see a Stix, Baer & Fuller logo...I had tried to find a picture of it somewhere earlier. I've never stopped getting a kick out of that retro bathroom looking Stix store at River Roads with that bizarre one-story area. And yes, I second matt there on #13...it's been over two years now and even further down. Anybody ELSE get excited about going to the mall these days? I didn't think so.
Speaking again of hallowed #13, I can't help but think to myself whenever I see a Stern's logo, "Gee, that looks awfully similar to the Rich's logo..." Any connection? I mean, I know that both were Federated subs at the time, but did somebody make the conscious decision to use virtually (if not exactly) the same font, or is it some sheer coincidence?

Coincidence I think. They were not exactly the same font. The font for the Rich's logo after much research turned out to be Antique Central Extended (and sometimes just Antique Central). The Rich's font is a commercial font, and thus must be purchased at a fee...and right now as a very poor college student I do not have $30 to throw around like that. I have not had time to research what the font was for the original Davison's logo, however. You should see my proposal for restoring the original downtown Davison's sign on my blogsite

Actually, Stern's and Rich's weren't corporate cousins back when that ad was done. Federated didn't merge with Rich's until 1976, and Stern's was an Allied division up until the late '80s. They just had similar logos.
As a Missourian, I was also pleased to see the Stix, Baer, and Fuller logo, as well as the Jones Store. Such memories...
