Greetings from Fremont, Nebraska and the Fremont Mall... where shopping in the mall is a family affair! I know that because it says so on this cool vintage postcard, which shows not only the exterior of the Penney's (or JCPenney if you prefer) store at the mall, but also a good portion of its sign (the mall's).
I don't know a heck of a lot about Fremont Mall, but I don't have to, because Labelscar has my back on this one. They have both a great post on the mall with lots of info and contemporary photos, as well as a more recent shot taken from almost the same spot as this vintage one (and it still looks surprisingly similar!). Check it out.

Reminds me a lot of the Penney's (opened in 1965) at Eastgate Shopping Center here in Chattanooga. They kept the original Penney's logo well into the 80s, I believe. Too bad they felt they had to change it.....
ReplyDeleteThis is off the subject, but is there any way you could please email me the zip file of your vintage shopping radio spots when you get a chance? I just discovered them last week, and the links don't seem to work anymore.....My email address is tpledger@comcast.net
Thanks!
Tom
Wish the photographer could have gotten a photo of the entire sign instead of just half of it.
ReplyDeleteJust curious -- would anyone happen to know what this mall's original anchors were?
ReplyDeleteWell, Penneys was one obviously. I'm not sure what could have occupied Gordmans spot. That chain was actually ailing in the early/mid 1990s. Only until 5 years ago, have they become fairly popular, mostly in the Midwest and Upper Midwest states.
ReplyDeleteLabelscar's interior pics included one where the interior entrance for JCPenney still boasted, until just a year or two ago, the 'Penneys' signsage seen on this image. That was the cleanest color image of their old signage I had ever, and probably will ever see, since it was of recent vintage.
Recognized the website layout too for the mall. Dial Properties also owns the severly ailing Centerpoint Mall / Marketplace in Stevens Point, WI. That one was a failed project from the start when it opened in 1985. Never has been remodeled at all, and has switched hands several times, ownership-wise. Nor was it ever fully leased out. They just don't know how to run malls very well, however, Fremont, judging by Labelscar's imagery (which I already commented on when it was posted last year) seems to be holding its own alright.
Personally, old pictures of malls are my favorite (which is why I'm here). The way malls look nowadays, I'd just as soon forget.
ReplyDeleteThey've managed to squeeze every last drop of coolness and character out of all our shopping malls now.
I was gonna send this to you, but I couldn't find your email, so I'll just post it here: http://www.chucksphotospot.com/ just click on where it says "Abandoned" on the top menu.
ReplyDeleteThis place has the best ever pics of the Dixie Square Mall, as it looks today...lots of nice pics of the inside! I found this in a blog called Retro Romance. Thought you'd like it.
Nice job with this blog. I love it. Keep up the great work. :)
Oh yeah! Almost forgot...found this neat time line of Dixie Square: http://pawfilmworks.com/DSMHistory.html
ReplyDeleteNot sure if you've seen this or the photos, but I figure I'd post them anyway. :)
I happen to be from Fremont and went to that mall hundreds of times when I was growing up. Penney's was (and is) the major anchor, but there was also a department store that I think was called Phillip's or something similar. They gave out those S&H green stamps that you always found in the bottom of drawers, stuck between papers, etc. I bought my first 45 record there. The highlight of going to that mall for me was always eating in the restaurant called King's and having cheese frenchies (deep fried grilled cheese sandwiches!). There was a dime store there, too, but the name escapes me and they had a barber shop that had "first haircut pictures" in the window. My brother had his first haircut there and they took a picture of him screaming and crying. :)
ReplyDeleteMmmm, yummy, those cheese frenchies sound really good!
ReplyDeleteI think that the building to the right of Penney's is an ill-fated JCPenney Auto Center.Penney stores from the 60s to mid 70's had them until they sold them to Firestone.
ReplyDeleteTempo was the anchor where Gordman's is now, and the dime store that was mentioned was called TG&Y.
ReplyDeleteOh yah, thats right Tempo, does anyone know more about the Tempo stores in Nebraska?
ReplyDeleteI think that it is great, I live in Guatemala and in this place is so difficult to find some of this malls, so I want to go to USA to meet the malls.
ReplyDeleteAs of 1977, these were the Tempo Stores in Nebraska:
ReplyDeleteColumbus, NE - US 30 Shopping Center
Fremont, NE - Fremont Plaza Shopping Center
