Toronto, Ontario, Canada - circa 1970s Colorful retro '70s postcard view of the entrance sign and interior of the
Sherway Gardens shopping centre in Toronto. I'll refrain from calling the interior "gaudy", but I'll just say it's definitely some bold '70s mall decor style at its finest! And I mean that in a good way. :)
More Sherway Gardens: 1
I visited Sherway Gardens twice in the mid-1980's and I believe the image on the right of the postcard was the food court near Loblaws. The food court area had a name that I can't recall. Something like Gourmet Fair or Court. An expansion and renovation took place in the late 1980's or early 1990's that removed the Loblaws and the food court was relocated further south. A tent-like roof highlights this area and you can see it from the QEW or Gardiner Expressway or whatever it is called. It has been quite a while since I have visited Toronto.
ReplyDeleteBTW, they still use that logo today.
Thanks for the additional notes, higgy!
ReplyDeleteLove that cute little logo!!!
ReplyDeleteKeith, I hope you didn't refrain from using the word gaudy because of the what I said when you featured the last Canadian mall on MOA. What is THAT hanging from the ceilings anyway?
Daaaaaaaamn! Check out THAT sign and dem banners! 70's malls kick mondo mucho butt!
ReplyDeleteLife is too shoet and (currently) boring to settle with anything less than that!!
Don-O
As a kid I remember Sherway Gardens looking like this... My dad worked with Norris McDonald at Claude Neon Ltd.on the electrical circutry to change the colours of the neon tubes on the circular ceiling outside of Simpson's (Now it's a Bay store... and the ceiling is boring and plain!)
ReplyDeleteThe retro-70's hegaxonal wall pattern is still visible outside what used to be Eatons (now a Sears store)
