North Whittier Heights Shopping Center

La Puente, California - circa 1960s

Retro postcard view of the North Whittier Heights Shopping Center (as it was called then) strip mall plaza in La Puente, CA (not an enclosed shopping mall). Stores seen here in this groovy shot include an Alpha Beta supermarket at the far end, Country Club Pharmacy, and Cork & Bottle Liquor. I have no idea whether this plaza is still around today, and if so, what name it might be going by now, etc., but it sure looked swanky back then!

Ah, Alpha Beta. Anyone remember Alan Hamel and his "tell a friend" commercials?
That style of architecture is found in Northern California, too. Safeway dabbled a little in that roofline, but not for very long. It was synonymous with Alpha Beta!

Speaking of La Puente...

I don remember the La Puente Mall (or Center) from the 70's I lived in El Monte, CA around 1974 and remember to the Mall or Center.

Hey, Keith? Would you happen to bump into any pics/postcards the that other L. P. shopping place?

This Alpha Beta is now a Ralphs, and still looks like this! Its located on Workman Mill Road and Don Julian Ave in the Bassett area. Address is:
520 S Workman Mill Rd La Puente, CA 91746

The center has been since remodeled, but the Ralphs kept the style of the Alpha Beta.

I dont know whats there today. The pharmacy is gone.

I grew up within a mile of this place. I live in NYC now but the Alpha Beta...later Ralphs looked the same forever. There also was a TG&Y in this shopping center at one point.

Jeff #2 -
This isnt that one. The mountains would be behind the store if it was the one on Gale. this one is the one on Workman Mill.

Wow...OK I see that. Good sleuth work! All I have to add is that architect got paid at least twice to design that mall. They are identical! I wonder how many more times that architect got paid fpr the same design? Jeff 2

Speaking of "Tell A Friend" I found a picture of my grandpa wearing a Tell A Friend shirt that he obviously got from the Alpha Beta, because it was the same logo. ANYONE know where I could find this shirt??? thanks

This Alpha Beta is on Workman Mill Rd, the parking lot was on a slope, worked there from 1971-73 and remember pushing carts up the paking lot slope, left the store to begin college in the fall of 1973.
