MOA Galleria - I Heart Retail Store Mannequins
Whether they be lounging about the aisles minding their own business, or just taking it easy in a darkened window display, I dig store mannequins. No, not in a weird, "unhealthy" way mind you (so stop thinking what you're thinking), just in a "I think they're kinda zombie-creepy but still really groovy" way. :)
So I like posting pictures of them here for that spooky, after hours mall ambiance they provide--in case you're ever wondering why I do it so much. Mannequins just make me think of shopping malls, and shopping malls make me think of mannequins.
Plus, I think there's Art to be found in pictures of them. Like the one above (by Hyperlux).
Art, hunh? She looks like she just escaped from an insane asylum from the 1970s.
ReplyDeleteI know I have mentioned this before but Keith if you like mannequins then you should see the movie Mannequin from the 80s. Light and fun. Also Joan Crawford did a movie called Mannequin back in the 30s but I haven't seen it.
"She looks like she just escaped from an insane asylum from the 1970s"
ReplyDeleteLol! You're right, Didi! Heck, that's probably why I like it. I like weird, creepy stuff. ;)
As for the Mannequin flicks, I've seen them, and I have blog post drafts just waiting somewhere down in the MOA queue, talking more about them, heh. I keep planning to work those in at some point.
Definitely can't talk about store mannequins without mentioning the '80s flick with Kim Cattrall and Andrew McCarthy. It's a no-brainer and it's coming soon. Thanks for the tip on the Joan Crawford one. I'll check into it.
This is definitely a spooky picture!
ReplyDeleteDon't forget the Twilight Zone episode where the mannequins came to life! (or so the main character thought)
ReplyDeleteAnd then there is always the Doctor Who story (three of them, actually), where mannequins actually do come to life and start killing people.
ReplyDeleteI prefer looking at the realistic
ReplyDelete(older) mannequins, you know the ones that have heads, arms, legs on them?
Indeed those types are an artform, the new ones with no heads, armless, etc. are just to morbid to look at,and I can't see the new "stylized" types as pleasing,I mean how can you picture yourself wearing something thats on a decapitated mannequin?
Sometimes manneqiuns seem so real you think they're an actual person for a second, fun how they play tricks on your mind. ;)
I love your blog so much that I did a blog about it!!! This is the photo that sucked me in!
ReplyDeleteOkay, all you have to do now is post some pictures of clowns and you will have me creeped-out totally. The mannequins at the stores were always something that made me feel uneasy. Watch that Twilight Zone episode and you will know what I mean.
ReplyDeleteAnd don't forget James Spader as the geeky department store manager.
ReplyDeleteAccording to IMDB the Joan Crawford titled Mannequin isn't quite as fun as the 80s versian. It isn't even about mannequins. Based on the plot it seems she may just act like one metaphorically.
And I agree with Mark about new mannequins. Headless, armless, not good. I especially loath the ones that comes with either flat heads or round heads with no facial expressions whatsoever.
I like them as well. I worked at a Bon-Ton in Western New York several years ago. They used to have a salon, but closed it, and it became a graveyard for mannequins. I got to go in there a few times and see the old mannequins amidst the old salon fixtures...very creepy and cool. Too bad I didn't have my camera handy.
ReplyDeleteI like store mannequins too. They seem to have personalities of their own. The elegant looking old ones are the best. I worked at a department store for a couple of years and became well acquainted with many of them. Great blog, I'll definitely add you to my bookmarks.
