SouthPark Mall

All photos: Charlotte, North Carolina - circa early '70s

Here's a series of retrolicious old color photos that were taken inside of Ivey's (now Dillard's) at SouthPark Mall early in the mall's life! These shots have it all; that great, gloomy mall mood lighting, sexy-swanky '70s suburban housewives shopping, groovy technicolor clothes, and even some nekkid mannequins to boot (which are my favorite kind)! Enjoy.

Huge thanks once again to Pat Richardson, who submitted these great photos (you can too, just e-mail 'em to me)! Can't thank you enough for these great photos, Pat. Thanks for taking the time to share them with us!

Ivey's was my favorite department store back in the day, and SouthPark was their suburban flagship.

Those mannequins are about to come to life and suck the souls from those suburban housewives!

The Ivey's (now Dillards( at Orange Park Mall in Jacksonville, FL still has a similiar color scheme. It's a nasty pink with carpet that no longer has a definitive color. It's a very successful store, they just never bothered to update it. Same for the Merritt Square Mall store in Cocoa Beach. The odd thing is, Dillards closed a similiar store at Volusia Mall in Daytona Beach for almost a year to make it a "typical" Dillards. Of course, after buying the former Belk space and the Gayfers chain, Dillard's now has three full-size stores in Volusia Mall.

I LOVE THESE PHOTOS!!!!!!!! The clothes, the hair, the styles. And just in time too, I am going to visit a vintage clothing store later today. This has got me prepared.

We went to McAlister Square as a kid and there was an Ivey's there. We NEVER went inside... my parents said it was too expensive. I remember thinking, "I gotta get in that place!" Ivey's was the BOMB!

As Lewis Grizzard once said, there's a difference between "naked" and "nekkid". When you're naked that means you ain't got no clothes on - when you're nekkid that means you ain't got no clothes on and you're up to something.

It looks like those mannequins are going to have a kinky little party! Even they have to let their hair down after closing time.

I stand by my other post for SP. It's rich yuppy mall. It has some very interesting structures inside it today but all in all, over exspensive junk. But yes the insides of it are cool.
