Lakewood Center
Lakewood, California - 1959
Here's a little vintage retail bliss for your lazy Sunday afternoon. Enjoy this quaint shot along a breezy, sun-kissed promenade at the Lakewood Center. We've got a Woolworth store right next to a May Company, and some warm California sun. What more do you need?

Sweeeet!
I'm surprised that this mall is still closed on Easter. It's a really busy day for a mall.
Used to go to lakewood mall when i was little my Grandms brother worked at May Co.
I might as well bring this up-to-date...I, too, went to a lot of these So.Calif. centers, having grown up in 1960s. And 1970s.:) I still like it, but much mnetter earlier;...btw the May Co.STORE is still there, the quaint archetecture (the Crenshaw 1947 May Co. is or was done similiar). The Woolworths like many others stayed open to 1997, the very end...by the time I regularly went there in 1990s, on my own (I live in Whittier!) (& by the way, a December 20, 1990 Los Angeles Times article (Bettina Boxall and Michelle Fuestch?) on malls got me started on going here!)..Woolworht was the same store but changed the logo. (I've posted to Mitch Glaser and "Den"(The "Mall Hall of Fame" blog runner) on some entries.)
Speaking of that store, a few of those older pink or red-front yellow or white lettering,
in Los Angeles proper,
still kept that original logo (that cool, "Times" serif- F.W.Woolworth Co.) logo (with standard one letter at a time vertical sign from back in the day on one), the one with that vertical sign on Broadway and Fifth Street, (Broadway, just a few
stores downward)
and another with just a horizontal sign, on Hollywood and Cahuenga, southwestern corner by an alley (an incense store is next to it)
(Hollywood), both of these on the southwestern corners, the first on west and second on south. San Diego used to have one of those old-school Woolworth's, again with the "F.W...Co" slogan and logo.Later ones had various letterings in straight 1950s more normal modern lettering, and were just 'Woolworth's", and among these since 1968 a stock logo like the Albertsons and the Doors and Warner 1970s W logo (to me anyway.) The logos on Woolworth could be endless. The J.C.Penny was finished in 1966 and was a Penney's, one of the first of thesemore modern ones along with Fallbrook Square, and in fact (Montclair Plaza (1968), Calif.) still had that "kick-ass" 1960s P for "Penney'"s with the "MODERN" (1970 onward) JCPenney (sic-but that's their logo way) logo.) The Target (or whatever big box store that is on northern end)/Monty Ward used to be a Butler Brothers.
I like the 1959 picture! It looked a lot cleaner back then!
