Uh-oh. Looks like Noah's got too many penguins and children on his ark. Tsk. Two each, Noah. Two each.

My father was an associate pastor at Kansas City First Church of the Nazarene in the early 60's when it was located on Troost Ave. I loved going to The Landing and climbing on the statues there. I understand that the neighborhood has greatly changed due to the middle class families moving out and the poor moving in, unfortunately a too oft told tale in America. Even 1st Church abandoned the inner city for the 'burbs.
But I really enjoyed the time I spent in KC. In 1961, I went to see the New York Yankees during the Maris/Mantle home run race. I saw my heroes play the game. Maris hit a homer over the right field wall in old Municipal Stadium.

Sometime in the late 70's or early 80's. the tallest statues were fenced off, so only the low profile animals could be climbed on. The ladder was removed from the elephant, too. Then a year or two later, the statues were give to the KC Zoo. The zoo moved them to their park, where they quickly fell victim to the elements, and were disposed of after only a few years. As to the fountain, it was encircled with a fence sometime in the 60's to keep people from wading in it, and it survived to some point after the animals were removed. I went there once in the 90's, and the fountain was gone. The current landing has no theming to its original name. I live in StL, so I get very little chance to go there anymore.
