Mayfair Mall
Wauwatosa, Wisconsin - 1959
The North Mall area in the Mayfair Shopping Center. Looks kind of lonely, here don't it? I can just picture sitting there contemplating my navel, while the spooky wind whips eerily through the trees and open spaces. Brrr!
Man, if I were the last man on earth, I would love hanging out at abandoned shopping malls. Here's Mayfair's current website.

I used to live down the street from this mall. It doesn't look anything like this anymore. In fact, they added an entire upper story to it. It also has an almost entirely new fascade.
Oh, man. Blast from the past! I remember when Mayfair looked like this. It's been through massive growth in the last 10 years. It's just too congested now. I hardly ever go there any more, unless I need to stop at the Apple Store or Marshall Field's. Guess I'll go check out the new Crate & Barrel, but I'm in no rush.
My grandmother lived nearby and used to take my brother and me to many movies at the old movie theatre when we were kids (the one I remember most clearly was Xanadu). The new in-mall multiplex just doesn't have half the character. Well, that, and no grandma. *sigh*
Oooh, yes, the Apple Store. The mall was anything but deserted when the Apple Store opened up. And, yes massive growth as well. Good luck finding a parking spot anywhere near the entrances.
I remember going here when it looked that way too. In the ..late 70's? 1979? my friend and I convinced our parents / mom let us take the bus down to Milwaukee from Green Bay for some Back to School Shopping. We were like in Eighth or Ninth grade at the most.
Anyone remember the robot that made cookies every Christmas at Mayfair mall?
Let's not forget the ice skating rink that was in the center of the mall! I really miss the old Mayfair - the new one's too big and crowded. I get a throbbing headache just being inside for 5 minutes!
Precious PRECIOUS little of Mayfair still exists in 1960/1970... There are still a couple areas (noteably inside the anchors) that haven't bothered to rennovate...
Does anybody else think that if somebody opened up a mall that looked like some of these on this board that it would be a hit? With this whole RETRO craze with all the kids these days... I'm sure everybody would flock in their witty graphic T-shirts and shop at Ben Franklin & Walgreen's...

Went to Mayfair 2 years ago in a BLINDING SNOW STORM ...another story, anyway, the place is huge and very trendy. If I visit a new place, I want to see the "mall to visit," everyone said this was it. Marshall Field's had that "suburban look" with the rock. So nice, today you get bland everything looks the same ...like Dillard's. I digress
The robot that made cookies was at Capitol Court. It entertained the kids waiting in line for Santa.
My favorite memories of Mayfair Mall? There used to be a little stream that ran from one end to the other that had goldfish in it. Seperated by the ice rink. I remember sitiing in the McDonalds after ice skating. And at Christmas they had the little building with the robotic talking reindeer.
I remember my mom taking me to Mayfair Mall in the early 70's. It was enclosed then and not open air anymore. I remember the ice rink and the McDonalds near it but I don't remember the 2 man made rivers with fish that ran inside and separated the sides of Marshall Fields and Gimbels stores. I do remember that Gimbels having deep red colored carpeting. (Gimbels is now Boston Store). I also remember that in the area that now houses the Buddy Squirel nut/candy shop and Talbots Clothing, there were other stores and one had a small circular metal staircase that went up to a second story....it was like a woman's clothing store cause my mom would go in it. Anyone else remember it? You can still see some "old" areas - like if you go on the 2nd floor by the food court...there is a hallway that leads to some restrooms and there is an older elevator...also some stairs that lead to some offices.
Wow, I remember the ice skating rink aka the "Ice Chalet" with the McDonalds right next to it. The Walgreens where I used to purchase "Garbage Pail Kids". The Movie Theater in the East parking lot going to see movies with my brother. I remember people being able to smoke in the mall. The 80's where a great time for Mayfair
I remember the streams and the ice rink. I loved the mall when I was a kid. The McDonalds still had the viewing area, even after they took out the rink and made it an atrium, it was kind of fun to people watch that way. It has sme character back in the day though. I have never liked it since the remodel but the stores are better, which I guess is the point of a mall!
The movie theater in back, wow. I remember waiting hours to see "Return of the Jedi" in 83. My high school acctualy had our prom at in the atrium, before the movie theater was inside, that was horrible.
